Civil War News

April 12 2011

Today is the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War: the Battle of Fort Sumter.

“Civil War News” was a set of trading cards launched in the US in 1962 by Topps, chewing gum manufacturers. The artist was Norman Saunders. They were later issued in Canada and the UK. I collected them as a kid, though I don’t remember consuming much chewing gum (or was it bubble gum?). They are on Flickr under a Creative Commons license courtesy of Xerones. Read columns downwards for the pictures. There is a different order for the reverse. They will open in a new tab.

Number 21, Painful Death, was especially prized.

Thanks for these, they bring back a lot of memories of my childhood, managed to collect the full set and as i remember it was chewing gum that tasted something like an unpleasant medicine.

    • I collected these growing up in England – was watching a PBS show on the battle of Shiloh which prompted me here, didn’t quite recognize the card fronts, but the format on the back brought it all back. And yes, the pink gum tasted like antiseptic Germolene, which I actually liked!
